Eleven Classic Short Stories

Submitted by mike on Thu, 04/08/2010 - 01:48

I've been meaning to do this for ages and I've finally done it; I've taken all my readings of classic short stories from 'Sometimes' and released them as a stand-alone podcast with the help of the good people at Podiobooks.com.

classics

It's interesting for me to listen to these again as I can hear the room I was in and the mic I was using when I recorded them. For example, 'The Cold Embrace' was recorded in a huge sitting room with an open kitchen attached (inc. the original fridge), and using the same mic I used for One Among the Sleepless, while 'Dagon' for example, was recorded in a small room with my current mic. I could go on about good and bad rooms and microphones all day, but I won't bore you. To cut a long story short, the podcaster who rents apartments and houses has to use whatever four walls come to hand, and some lodgings give rise to better podcast audio than others. There see, I'm already boring myself. I'll shut up.

The podcast is available here at Podiobooks

And here at iTunes.

Miss Wong

Miss Wong

Bennett
Miss Wong: she used to be sold by the millions from branches of Boots the Chemist in Britain in the sixties and seventies. Now she tends to turn up in second-hand stores and charity shops, which is where I found her. A few years later, at a time of slender means, I had to sell her on to second-hand store. It was a tough decision, and one I still regret to this day. But I know in my heart, that one day, in a charity shop somewhere, Miss Wong, Someday, We'll Meet Again.

The title of this slim volume of podcast poems comes from "Charity Shop" the first in the collection. Each podcast features one or more poems written by my good self, Mike Bennett, between 2004 - 2005. Most of them from the late summer of 2004 when I decided to write a poem every day about anything that came to mind. The poems in this collection take the form of streams-of-consciousness, narratives, reveries, reflections and word-snapshots.

This isn't poetry as I learned it in school, it may not even be poetry at all. It's only purpose was ever really to help me remember things that otherwise I may have forgotten. And maybe when you listen, even though you weren't there, maybe they'll help you remember something of your life too.

Sometimes 12: Gabriel-Ernest by Saki

Submitted by mike on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 10:06

Here's Sometimes 12, with its featured story, 'Gabriel-Ernest' by Saki. If you're a long-time Sometimes listener, you'll be familiar with Saki from Sometimes 1, 2, 5 and 6. As you might have guessed, he's one of my favourites, and it's always a pleasure for me to bring his brilliant tales to life.

The podcast also features a poem from me, music from A Band Called Quinn, and a trip to the fridge to check on the Squid Brand Fish Sauce.

Sometimes 11: H.P. Lovecraft's Dagon

Submitted by mike on Fri, 02/12/2010 - 08:58

In a Lovecraft-themed ... ish edition of Sometimes. Mike reads H.P. Lovecraft's classic horror short story, Dagon. There's also a reading of Mike's own poem, Seeking the Unwanted, which is nothing to do with Lovecraft, but, er ... Anyway, music comes from old favourites, Fruitcake Superbeing and A Band Called Quinn.

Sometimes 11: Preview

Sometimes 11 should be online in the next few days. The featured story will be 'Dagon' by H.P. Lovecraft, and as you can see from the picture below, it's a fearful tale indeed. The artwork is by Jeff Remmer, and you can find more his fantastic Lovecraftian visions on his page at The Temple of Dagon.

Sometimes 10: The Cannibalism in The Cars by Mark Twain

Submitted by mike on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 06:32

Hello Listeners

It's that time of the month again - the time when something drops into your inbox from me. And this time it's me reading Mark Twain's story, 'The Cannibalism in The Cars'. It was, I don't mind telling you, a b****** of a task. It took innumerable takes and left about a million cuttings on the cutting room floor, but finally, it's done. I don't even know if it's any good or not at this stage - I listened through it this morning and I was almost speaking along with it - I know the words so well. Anyway, for better or worse, here it is. Bon apetit ...

Sometimes Dec '09

Submitted by mike on Sun, 12/20/2009 - 15:12

A special festive edition of Sometimes featuring the Q&A that didn't make it onto the end of U&F 21. In this searching interview, Mike answers listeners' questions on Underwood and Flinch, while dodging the deeper issues like politics, God and 'dryness'.

Guest starring Mike's wife and an old friend from an earlier 'Sometimes'.

Cheers for now

Sometimes 8: The Human Chair

Submitted by mike on Sat, 08/16/2008 - 18:32

Nothing to get too excited about, just a news bulletin, a song, a classic creepy story and of course, a glimpse into my fridge. It's just my way of saying, "Hello, I'm not dead." I hope you like it.

Is 'Sometimes' the best European personality podcast? How should we know, it's not like we've listened to every 'personality' podcast in Europe is it? Still, that's no reason why 'Sometimes' shouldn't win ;-)

Follow the link and vote: 'Mike Bennett Sometimes'. It'll... er.... make me very happy. Thanks in advance.
